About a year ago, I listened to a Barbell Shrugged podcast with Dr. Rhonda Patrick, a biochemist that specializes in nutrition and supplements. After listening to her I realized that I have not been giving my body the micro-nutrients it needs to function optimally. Instead of having to build a "mighty" salad of kale and spinach with avocado, apples, blueberries...etc. Dr. Patrick suggests an easier way to give your body what it needs daily. Below you will find her "Green Machine" smoothie recipe and a link to her video that explains the importance of taking in these foods.
8 kale leaves
3 cups of flax milk
4 rainbow chard leaves with stem
3 cups of spinach
1 cup of blueberries
1 shot of flax seed oil (optional)
My version: I substituted the flax milk with cashew milk and added a cup of strawberries along with half a serving of vanilla protein powder. You may want to add more liquid to the smoothie, depending on the consistency you want. This recipe makes 64 ounces and is meant to make 2 servings. Simply half everything if you are only making it for yourself. In the video, Dr. Patrick mentioned she drinks it every morning. I drank my 32 ounces of vegetables at work when I was a teacher, as a snack- after breakfast and before lunch.
DIVERSITY CAN BE A GOOD THING
To get the most micronutrients in our diet you should try different vegetables and fruits with this smoothie. Your version of Dr. Rhonda Green Machine can mirror what is in season at the market. With a good balance of vegetables and little fruit, your body will thank you. Check the links below to learn more about the benefits in this smoothie.
