“You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.”
Approximately three years ago as Kat and I came home from our farm we noticed a huge Penske truck in the driveway of the house two doors down. The house had been for sale and seemingly had some new occupants. I hit the brakes, put down my window and bellowed from the street, “hey are you our new neighbors?” That was the first time we met Jen and Dusty and we quickly struck up a friendship.
As you all know, the first rule of CrossFit is to tell everyone you know about CrossFit. It took a few months to talk them into joining us, but eventually they worked up the courage to come train at our house. Dusty was a collegiate swimmer at one time ranked in the top twenty nationally and a Navy Rescue Swimmer. Jen would probably tell you that she wasn’t, isn’t and never will be an athlete. I wrote a workout on the whiteboard that would challenge them and allow me to assess their baseline. I wrote the following:
10 Ring Rows
10 Push Ups
10 Air Squats
It took Jen more than thirty-six minutes to complete the workout. I had my doubts as to whether she would ever return for a second training session. To my surprise, she did return and continued to do so. Three months later I had her test herself against the baseline workout and she completed it in six minutes and thirty-six seconds. Yes, I still remember the exact time, it was that awesome to watch. She pushed herself, made sacrifices and dropped more than thirty minutes from her time. Jen has lost a considerable amount of weight and kept it off. Dusty no longer takes the medicine to regulate his blood pressure that he took when he started training. At one point his doctor asked him in shock, “what the hell are you doing?”
Jen and Dusty sent me a text a few months after I started coaching them. They thanked me for helping them make the lifestyle changes they had. That moment was a catalyst for me going to get my L1. Going to New Orleans and getting my L1 helped me get the opportunity to coach at Mako CrossFit. Coaching all the great people at Mako and seeing the impact we can have in improving the quality of life of so many inspired us to open the doors at Revolt.
You can only connect the dots looking backwards.
Jen and Dusty, it is us that should be thanking you for your encouragement, advice and most importantly friendship. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
You are Revolt
No Retreat, No Surrender
